Breeder or classified ad, what's the difference

Short answer: Both can be good. The difference is not in the quality of the animals, but in what you have if something goes wrong: a promise, an invoice and a contact person, or an agreement between private individuals. The price difference pays for exactly that. If you know the difference, you can choose both consciously.

Both can be good. The difference only becomes apparent when something goes wrong.

First: classifieds are not the problem

A large proportion of the most beautiful Swiss lines come from hobby breeders. Those who have kept, selected and sold the same line for years often have more stable colours than a large company. If you live nearby and pick up the animals, you save them the transport altogether. This is the best way there is and it costs almost nothing.

So this site doesn't say anything bad. It explains what the extra charge is for with a commercial provider so that you can decide for yourself whether you need it.

What was observed and when

On 10 September 2026 we collected the price ranges on public Swiss platforms and in Swiss shops. This is a snapshot, not an average or a statistic.

ChannelObserved price range per animalSource observed on 10.09.2026
Private classifiedsCHF 2.75 to 4.00, lower when dispensing larger quantitiestier-inserate.ch, Shrimp Switzerland category
Swiss breeder shopsCHF 4.90 to 6.90garnelenmarkt.ch, category Neocaridina
Swiss hobby shopCHF 2.00 to 7.00zwerggarnele.ch

We deliberately do not give an average price. An average of three snapshots would be a number that doesn't exist.

What the surcharge specifically pays for

  • Failure. Anyone who ships live animals commercially takes losses and subsequent deliveries into account. This is the largest single item.
  • Packaging and shipping window. Styrofoam box, heat pack or cool pack, and the willingness not to ship for a week in frost or heat instead of leaving the risk to the buyer.
  • Tank space and time. Animals that are kept separated by lines need more tanks than animals that grow in a pot.
  • Information afterwards. If something is wrong after three days, someone who knows the line can be reached.

How you can recognize a serious delivery, in both channels

  1. One line, one tank. Anyone who keeps different Neocaridina colours together produces mixed breeds, even if the parents look good. Ask about it.
  2. Own photos from the real tank. Catalog images and symbol images say nothing about the animals you get.
  3. Comprehensible water parameters. Anyone who can say at what hardness and temperature the animals grew up has observed them.
  4. Clear statement about origin. Own breeding, purchased or imported. All three are legitimate, only the ambiguity is not.
  5. An answer to the question of what applies to problems. “Nothing, that’s a private tax” is also a fair answer. No answer is no answer.

What applies in our marketplace

On the Marketplace There are seller profiles with breeding location and information about the breeding. The statement “Swiss-bred shrimp” is purely a self-declaration by the respective seller; we do not check it in advance and do not award a seal of approval for it. Garnelenfischer itself does not sell or breed shrimp, so there is no own offer with a seal of approval. If you notice something about an offer, you can report it to us and we will moderate it afterwards.

There is no active buyer protection here. We do not hold any money and cannot withhold payment. What is missing is in the Guidelines.

The honest recommendation

If someone near you drops off the line you want and you can pick it up: do that. The animals don't have to worry about transport, you see the tank they come from and you save money.

If you need to have it shipped, if you need an invoice, or if you don't want to bear the transport risk for your first tank: then that's exactly what you pay for with a commercial provider. Both are sensible decisions.

Sources and method

The price ranges were on 10 September 2026 observed on the mentioned public pages. This is a one-day sample, not a market analysis. Prices change and individual listings are outside the stated ranges.
