Marketplace: free, no commission
Garnelenfischer
Free marketplace for Swiss-bred shrimp

Dwarf shrimp from the fisherman who doesn’t sell them.

Garnelenfischer runs the free Swiss marketplace for captive-bred Neocaridina. Swiss breeders list for free and you contact them directly. Garnelenfischer does not sell shrimp itself, but sells food from Japan. Its own Chaotic Shrimp food is in development.

Colours and mixed groups at a glance

The overview shows colour categories of Neocaridina davidi. “Mixed” means a mixed group, not a separate colour variety. The categories are a guide, not evidence of animals currently being available.

Our focus remains Neocaridina. We are not currently expanding Caridina or other Medaka offerings. The Japanese food is a separate offering; it does not imply a Medaka marketplace.

Why this marketplace?

There is no commission: we connect buyers and sellers, but do not sell the shrimp.

Register for free

Create a profile, write a listing, done. No fee, commission or subscription, whether you are a buyer or seller.

No advance review

We do not check listings before publication. Listings that raise concerns are moderated afterwards, rather than blocked beforehand.

Direct contact

You agree the purchase contract, price, shipping or collection directly with the seller. Garnelenfischer does not handle the transaction or accept payments.

Swiss-bred: the seller's own declaration

Sellers state themselves whether their animals were bred in Switzerland. We do not verify this; we display the information as supplied.

An honest start

The marketplace has only just launched. We show the number of participating sellers as it is, even while it is small.

The backstory

Seven hours fishing, one catch: a shrimp that ate the bait.

My surname is Fischer. Wanting to live up to the name, I stood by the water one Saturday in April. No fish. When I reeled in, a tiny red creature was hanging from the hook. It had eaten my bait and was looking at me as though I was the problem.

She came home with me. These days I have more aquariums than furniture, and that story has become this marketplace.

Own sales

Food you will not find elsewhere in Switzerland.

In Japan, keeping Medaka is a branch of fishkeeping in its own right, with foods we simply do not have here. We import two directly: an everyday food with two live cultures that break down leftover food in the tank, and an ultra-fine rearing powder for young animals.

This is the only thing Garnelenfischer sells directly today. Our own food, Chaotic Shrimp , is in development.

The most common questions

How many shrimp do I need at least?

Most marketplace sellers require ten animals per group as a minimum purchase. In smaller groups Neocaridina hide, show less behaviour, and it is not certain that both sexes are present. For a 20 litre tank, ten animals is a good start, for 40 to 60 litres twenty.

Do I need a heater?

No. Neocaridina live at 18 up to 26 °C, i.e. at normal room temperature. Below 18 °C they become sluggish and reproduce more slowly, but this does not harm them. Above 27 °C the oxygen content drops, then an air pump helps.

Is Swiss tap water suitable?

In most communities, yes, without processing. Neocaridina like medium-hard to hard water with 6 to 20 °dGH, and that's exactly what comes out of the tap in the Mittelland. Mineral salt is only worthwhile in very soft regions such as parts of Ticino.

How long does my tank have to run before shrimp move in?

Three to four weeks until nitrite is permanently at zero. Nitrite is deadly to shrimp even in trace amounts and is not visible in the water. With filter material from a running tank, the time is halved.

Can I keep different colours together?

They get along without any problems, but they interbreed. After two to three generations, the offspring are wild brown again. If stable colours are important to you: one tank, one colour.

How much does it cost to ship food?

CHF 9.90, free for orders of CHF 90 or more. Shipping on Monday and Wednesday, order deadline Sunday 20:00 or Tuesday 12:00 Chaotic Shrimp is under development and cannot yet be ordered. For shrimp from the marketplace, you can arrange shipping or collection directly with the seller.
