About the Kyorin Hikari Medaka Pros

Medaka Pros is the everyday food of Japanese Medaka keepers and works just as well in our shrimp tank. Its two live cultures are what make it special: the Hikari strain reaches the animals' intestines alive, while the GB strain continues working in the water to break down leftover food and waste. In practice, this means less sludge, clearer water and more room for error if you overfeed. The food is undyed, so it releases no colourants into the water, and contains carotenoids that help maintain colour in both shrimp and Medaka. Made by Kyorin in Himeji, Japan. Garnelenfischer sells this food as a prepacked 10 g portion for CHF 5.90. The photo shows the original Japanese can; you receive the 10-g portion, not the whole can.

This is how you use it in the shrimp tank

Shrimp eat more slowly than fish and in significantly smaller quantities. Add as much as will be absorbed in two to three minutes, and take the rest out after half an hour. Two to three times a week is sufficient for a fully grown colony; the biofilm in the tank provides most of the food anyway.

Flake food can be rubbed between two fingers, so even young animals that can't handle a whole flake can get it. Keep the food cool, dry and tightly closed so that it can be used for several months after opening.

Overfeeding is a bigger problem in shrimp tanks than underfeeding. Remains decompose, nitrite increases, and this is exactly what invertebrates are sensitive to. More about this can be found in shrimp care guide.

Why we import feed from Japan

In Japan, medaka farming is a separate branch of aquarium keeping with appropriately developed feed. What is considered everyday food there is hardly available here: recipes with live cultures, very fine rearing powders, uncolored compositions. We buy the goods directly and store them in Switzerland so that you get them without customs documents and without weeks of delivery.

About the label: This is an original product with a Japanese label. Information on composition, analysis and feeding is provided on this page. If you have a specific question that is not answered here, ask us and we will translate the relevant information for you.

Frequently asked questions about Kyorin Hikari Medaka Pros

Can I feed medaka food to shrimp?

Yes. Neocaridina eat the same flakes as medaka, just more slowly and in smaller quantities. Rub the flakes between your fingers so that the young animals can get to them too.

What do living cultures bring?

One strain supports digestion in the animal, the other breaks down leftover food and excretions in the water. The result is less sludge and clear water for longer between water changes.

Does the food contain copper?

The formula is a standard Japanese-made ornamental fish food and has been used by shrimp farmers for years. If you want to be on the safe side, feed sparingly as always and observe the animals in the first week.

How is the food shipped?

Garnelenfischer only sends feed, by post on Monday or Wednesday. Shipping costs CHF 9.90 per order, and is free for orders of CHF 90 or more. Garnelenfischer does not ship shrimp; You can arrange shipping or collection of animals directly with the seller on the marketplace.

Where does the goods come from?

Imported directly from Japan and stored in Switzerland. This is an original product with Japanese labelling; information on composition and feeding is provided on this page.
